What's New!

January 2014

  • Leslie Choquette, professor of history and director of the French Institute has been appointed to the newly endowed Cote Chair of French Studies at Assumption College. The chair was created by a generous bequest from the late Vivienne F. Côté of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.
  • In collaboration with Digital Commonwealth, Massachusetts’s online repository for cultural heritage materials, the French institute has digitized unique materials from the Jobin Family Archive.  These materials are freely accessible through the Internet Archive and include two versions of La Mode, the Design and Suitability of Dress and a collection of articles Miss Jobin wrote for the Boston Teacher’s News Letter on art and French and Franco-American culture and history.
La Mode, is of particular interest as a reflection of fashion history seen through the eyes of an assimilated Franco-American in the mid-20th century Boston. Supplemented with original drawings and fabric samples, it was intended for use as a course book for students of fashion.  To view these materials please click here: https://archive.org/details/frenchinstituteassumptioncollege

Claire Quintal Featured in New Book

Jules Tessier, the founding editor of the journal Francophonies d’Amérique, has just published a new book of essays about francophone North America.  His chapter “Antonine, Annette, Claire: trois vestales de l’Amérique française” profiles Claire Quintal, founding director emerita of the French Institute, as one of three remarkable francophone women.  (The others are world-renowned Acadian writer Antonine Maillet and Annette Saint-Pierre of western Canada.)  Tessier’s chapter “Maria Chapdelaine, Franco-Américaine” also contains multiple references to Claire.  The book, entitled Le ciel peut donc attendre, can be ordered from Canadian booksellers or directly from Les Éditions de la Francophonie.
