If you choose to pursue a teaching degree, you’ll have the opportunity to pair a specific academic major with the education major, which will allow you to immerse yourself in the subject areas you will teach.

The education faculty at Assumption are former classroom teachers and scholars who possess a wealth of knowledge and experience that they enjoy sharing with their students.  Ongoing collaboration with teachers in local public and private schools allows the College to offer a program that is informed by innovative, current research and explores emerging best practices for effective classroom instruction.

To help you become the best teacher you can be, Assumption believes in providing students hands-on classroom experience. The education courses you will take in pursuit of a teaching degree will include multiple opportunities to engage in Worcester-area classrooms, starting in your first year and culminating in full-time student teaching.

Assumption offers state-approved teacher preparation programs for teaching licenses in elementary, middle and secondary school settings in Massachusetts. Depending on your interests and goals, you have the options of choosing from the following areas of study:

6 in 5 BA/MA Program

Fifth-year option for a Master of Arts in Special Education

The education department offers a five-year program that allows a student to complete requirements for both the Bachelor of Arts degree in liberal arts or science and a Master of Arts in Special Education degree. The program leads to eligibility for the Massachusetts Initial License for Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (Pre K-8, 5-12), as well as a Massachusetts Initial License in one of Assumption’s approved programs offered at the undergraduate level.

Concentration in STEM for Elementary Education Majors

Students interested in deepening their content and pedagogical knowledge of science, technology, and mathematics beyond the elementary education major are encouraged to consider concentrating in Elementary STEM.  Students completing this program will equip themselves with specific knowledge of the STEM subjects they will teach as elementary school teachers, as well as the capability to spark the interest and ability of future STEM students.  (Pending review from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Assumption is presently a state-approved program for its long-standing education program.)

Minor in Education

The minor in education is a unique option for students interested in studying the broader social and foundational dimensions of education without the requirements for teacher licensure. Students minoring in education take a total of six courses in education and related disciplines, in consultation with a member of the department.

* Pending review from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Assumption is presently a state-approved program for its long-standing education concentration program.
